Year Established: 2000

Type of Organization or Mission: The signature project is Witness to a Jewish Century. Approximately 1200 elderly Jews still living in Central and Eastern Europe are being interviewed (560 already completed.) The methodology is to get a 10-12 hour audio taped interview, which is then transcribed, edited and translated resulting in an autobiography for each individual. The project is also collecting thousands of family photographs with the respondents’ narratives about them. The result of the process will be books, films, exhibitions and educational materials telling the story of Jewish
life in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century.

Services: Holocaust and historical museums, archivists, historians and libraries are welcome to use the material (biographies in both English or original language, as well as photos) either directly from the website of by contacting the offices in Vienna or Budapest. Centro will also assist Holocaust organizations by sending teams to specific towns and cities to conduct interviews on their behalf.
