Mission or Purpose: The Arizona Jewish Historical Society (AZJHS) is a Phoenix Point of Pride, and its mission preserves and celebrates the rich heritage of Arizona’s Jewish communities, educates the public about the Jewish historical experience including the Holocaust, and promotes awareness of our state’s diverse history through arts, culture, and educational programming. The home of Phoenix’s first synagogue, the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center has been restored as a cultural/educational resource for all Arizonans. Built in 1921, the historic temple served as a sanctuary, religious school, and gathering center for local Jewish community. It was also used as a church by Chinese and later, Spanish speaking Baptist congregations.  Situated in the arts district in downtown Phoenix, the AZJHS, CPJHC was established in 1981 and sits adjacent to the Burton Barr Library. In 2008 the AZJHS was designated a Phoenix Point of Pride Historical Landmark by the Phoenix City Council. The Hilton Family Holocaust Education Center will be built on our site and is scheduled to open in 2027.

Services: The AZJHShelps to make an emotional connection to the Holocaust through many of our programs, including book discussions, film series, concerts, genealogy club, gallery exhibitions, as well as our educational seminars.
